You retreat from the edge of the gorge and set up a camp for the night in a mossy hollow surrounded by five tall pines. The spongy moss provides a comfortable bed and you hope the canopy of interlocking branches will keep you from getting wet. Tired from your long trek you settle down and fall asleep within minutes, but within the hour you are awoken by a deafening boom of thunder.

You open your eyes and see that it is raining heavily. The pines have kept you dry, but your shelter is not a safe one. The tall trees are efficient lightning conductors and you now find yourself in the middle of a violent electrical storm. You are struggling to your feet when suddenly a bolt of forked lightning strikes the top of the trees. There is a blinding explosion of blue-white light and you are hurled into the air by the force of the blast when this powerful bolt streaks to earth.
